Presentation boxed.Plique-a-jourPlique-a-jour is a French term meaning glimpse of day and is such a good description of the plique-a-jour method of enameling which allows you to see through the enamel. This technique was used by jewelers in the 1900s such as the great Lalique, and is only used nowadays by a handful of artisans. The enamel is suspended in the cells and doesnt back onto anything so it is almost like a stained glass window and because it is not backed by anything, the light reflects straight though letting you see the purity of the enamel. A true work of art.Basse TailleBasse Taille is a French term and means Low cut. The metal under the enamel (in this case it is sterling silver) has been engraved or etched with the desired design, and then vitreous enamel is applied. The engraved areas will take more of the enamel due to their depth therefore giving you definitions and a darker tone of the enamel compared to the shallower (not engraved) areas. Translucent enamels are used for Basse Taille engraving due to their superb transparent properties.
